Activision was giving demonstrations of the DS iteration of Call of Duty 4 in its business center today, and we’ve got a few more details to report on how the first-person shooter plays on Nintendo’s handheld. We already wrote a pretty glowing preview, and after some more time with the game we’re happy to report it is still impressing us.

You play a member of a team that is providing support to the squad in the PC and console version. The story runs parallel to its bigger counterpart, but all the levels will be new. There are 11 in all, and they’re broken up into sections that Activision says plays more like 15 levels. Developer n-Space also hired a different composer, so new tunes will be providing the soundtrack.

As we reported earlier, the stylus controls your aiming on the touch screen. But the bottom window also displays your map, which shows the lay of the land, your teammates, and enemies, who will flash red when shooting. A horizontal compass runs along the top of the screen, pointing out the direction of your current objective. Pressing left and right on the D-pad allows you to strafe, and it’s fairly easy to circle strafe with a mix of the D-pad and stylus. Your character will automatically melee if you get close enough to an enemy.

The rail shooting sections in a Black Hawk helicopter play very much like similar parts of GRAW 2. Lots of voiceover is being included in the game, including audio objectives given to you by NPCs and loads of battle chatter.

The development team is still ironing out the multiplayer games, but so far deathmatch, team deathmatch, capture the flag, and a flag variant called Iron Man (where one player holds onto the flag for as long as they can) have been confirmed.

Call of Duty 4 DS is set to release alongside its big brother on November 5. This is one handheld port that is looking like a really nice complement to the console/PC version.
